AEO Explained

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and why it matters more than SEO right now

A growing number of people no longer type a search query and scroll through ten blue links. They open ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity and ask a question the way they would ask a friend. "Recommend a good golf club near Wilmslow." "Who's a reliable plumber in Leeds." "Best 4 star golf hotel in the South West." The AI answers with two or three named businesses, sometimes fewer, and the conversation usually ends there. No page two. No list of ten to compare. Just an answer, and a name, or the absence of one.

AEO, short for Answer Engine Optimization, is the discipline built around that shift. It is the work of making sure your business is one of the names an AI assistant gives when someone asks the kind of question your customers actually ask.

How AEO is different from SEO

SEO optimizes for a ranked list. The goal is a position on a results page, and a click. AEO optimizes for a single, spoken style answer with no ranking to game and no page to land on before the decision is already half made.

That difference changes what "winning" looks like. Ranking third on Google for "golf club near Plymouth" still gets you a click and a chance to convert. Being the third name ChatGPT mentions might get you nothing, because most people stop reading after the first answer and never open your site at all. In our own testing, one golf resort was named the outright "best overall" pick by ChatGPT for a location based prompt, while a different AI platform did not mention the same business at all for the identical question. Same business. Same facts. Opposite outcome, depending only on which AI the prospect happened to open.

The AI Recommendation Score panel test found four UK golf operators who had never checked any of this before. One was absent from Perplexity entirely on a prompt where two other AI platforms independently called it the standout choice in the area. Full findings were covered by The Golf Business.

Why this matters now, not eventually

Three things are true at once. AI assistants are already being used for exactly this kind of local recommendation query, today, at real volume. Almost no business in golf or local services has tested what these tools are actually saying about them. And the businesses that do test it are finding real, fixable gaps rather than a level playing field.

That combination is what makes AEO worth acting on now rather than later. It is early enough that most competitors have not touched it, and the underlying signals AI models draw on (structured data, review sentiment, content depth, technical crawlability) are the same kind of thing a business can genuinely improve, not a black box.

What AI assistants are actually looking at

AI models do not have a private opinion of your business. They form an answer from what they can crawl and what they can find cited elsewhere. In practice that comes down to a handful of categories.

None of these are exotic. They are all diagnosable and, more usefully, all fixable, which is the entire point of testing them properly rather than guessing.

Is this just SEO with a new name

No, though the two overlap. SEO optimizes for search engine rankings. AEO tests and improves whether AI assistants mention your business when someone asks a question in your category. A site can rank well on Google and still be invisible to ChatGPT, or the reverse. The underlying fixes share some DNA (clean crawlable content, structured data, credible reviews) but the target outcome is different, and it needs to be measured separately.

What to do about it

Start by finding out what the honest answer is today. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity the exact question a customer would ask about your category and your area, and read what comes back. Most businesses have never done this once. If your business is absent, or named behind competitors, or described with the wrong information, that is a diagnosable and fixable gap, not a permanent state.
